* ABOUT THE SHOW *

SE ACULILLÓ? : GROUNDHOG DAY is a continuation of the SE ACULILLÓ? series started in October at AS220’s Resident Gallery featuring Luna Ayala, Linda Behar, Saulo Castillo, Leandro Castro, Kat Chavez, Tamara Diaz, Snake Eyes, Orlando Hernández, Rica Maestas, José Menendez, and Kendall Rivera-Lane.

The phrase, “Se aculilló?,” is a Colombian taunt that roughly translates to, “Are you scared?” More literally, Se aculilló? refers to a sensation of the body clenching up or curling inward in fear — a sensation specifically located in the ass.

SE ACULILLÓ? : GROUNDHOG DAY is a weekend pop up exhibit at TRADE POP-UP responding to fears associated with Groundhog Day.

According to the tradition, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on Groundhog Day, then the spring season will arrive early, some time before the vernal equinox. If, instead, it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and retreat back into its den, and winter weather will persist for six more weeks.

Examples of fears associated with Groundhog Day could be fear of a long winter, fear of seasonal depression, fear of human-created climate change and its on-going disasters, fear of expectations, fear of the foreclosure of possibilities (the groundhog only has two options: it sees its shadow, or it doesn’t)

* GUIDELINES *

All mediums, including performance/live arts, will be considered.

Strong consideration for Black artists, Indigenous artists, LGBTQAI artists, and artists who have been marginalized or disenfranchised from traditional presentations of art.

Given that the exhibit will take place over a limited time (a single weekend only), video, live art, and work with minimal installation needs will be given preference.

¿Se aculillo? / Are you scared?
Una exhibición de artistas contemporáneos Latine/Latinx
1 de Octubre – 31 de Octubre

FECHA TOPE: 15 SEPTIEMBRE 2017

Curada por: Benjamín Lundberg Torres Sánchez

AS220’s Resident Gallery
131 Washington Street, First Floor
Providence, RI 02903

Inauguracion: Octubre 7, 2017 | 5 PM – 7 PM

Acerca del show:

¿Se aculillo? / Are you scared?

Are you scared?.

Are you scared?
An exhibit of contemporary Latine / Latinx artists
October 1 – October 31

DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2017

Curated by Benjamin Lundberg Torres Sanchez

AS220’s Resident Gallery
131 Washington Street, First Floor
Providence, RI 02903

Opening October 7, 2017 | 5 PM – 7 PM

About the show:

¿Se aculillo? / Are you scared? is a one-month pop up exhibit in AS220’s Resident Gallery showcasing visual artists’ historically grounded and contemporary reckonings with fear.

The phrase. ¿Se aculillo?, is a Colombian taunt that roughly translates to, “Are you scared?” More literally, aculillo refers to a sensation of the body clenching or curling inward.

This October, as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Lundberg Torres Sanchez invites Latinx/Latine artists whose work relates to themes of fear, apprehension, and the body, OR to the phrase ¿Se aculillo? / Are you scared? to submit work.

Note about Latinx and Latine: The show title uses both Latinx and Latine as gender neutral forms of Latina/Latino. Latinx is a distinctly U.S. American, gender-neutral term that has been taken up by queer, radical spaces, and, subsequently, the academy in the United States. Latine (and the practice of replacing “a/o” endings with “e”), on the other hand, is a gender neutral language that more easily flows and conjugates in spoken Spanish.

About submissions:

Must identify as Latinx / Latine / Latino / Latina / Latin American / Hispanic to submit.

All mediums, including performance/live arts, will be considered.

Call for Artists of Color in North-Eastern U.S.

Participate in an expanded re-performance of Safety Pin Removal (2016) by Benjamin Lundberg Torres Sanchez, commissioned as a part of TRUST & DownStreet Art (Information below)

Description:

TRUST is looking for artists of color to join commissioned artist, Benjamin Lundberg Torres Sanchez, in re-performing Safety Pin Removal, a performance in response to the Post-Brexit, Post-Trump Election gesture of wearing a safety pin to indicate allyship with immigrants, refugees, and other marginalized people. (Read more here and here) Safety Pin Removal uses the body of the performer(s) as a site to test the limits of allyship with the public.

During the original action, Lundberg Torres Sanchez revealed to the audience a safety pin that was piercing the skin near his collar bone. He described the piercing process, and observed the audience’s winces and grimaces. After naming and rejecting their empathetic responses, Lundberg Torres Sanchez then asked them to collaborate in removing the safety pin from his skin — an act that requires collaboration, risk, trust, intimacy, and bodily contact.

The action ends when the safety pin is removed.

This remounted and expanded version, will experiment with taking the action into public space (as opposed to the theater or the gallery), research how different bodies experience performing the same action for an audience, and examine allyship between the performers themselves.

Requirements:

Must be a person of color.
Must be available September 9-10 to perform in North Adams, MA.
Must be comfortable receiving a temporary piercing through a layers of superficial skin.
(See performance documentation: http://www.jointhebenjam.org/pinremoval/)

Please e-mail safetypinremoval@gmail.com with a bio, CV/resume, and short statement of interest (100 words or less) by September 1st.
